Exploring What Environments Help Creativity Thrive

ree

At MoxieBox, we value safe, common spaces that foster creativity, connection, and higher learning. Looking to New York and public libraries as examples of these values, how can we consider our local areas and shared spaces to be further examples of creative learning, educational growth, and community sharing? Is there a need your community has that could benefit from a safe public space? New York has many opposing beliefs, yet they seem to push forward new ideas and solutions because of it. Are the voices in your area united in a creative mindset or are they opposing? Consider whether either situation could be beneficial. How does your local community differ from New York? Can you find similarities? How could your community’s perspective inform and contribute to a New York City table discussion on creativity?

Below is a poem written by MoxieBox Team member Anna East, reflecting on how a place like New York might inform the creative work we do. How can we listen to, learn from and infuse new perspectives?

Rose Reading Room

Written in the New York Public Library

Steps away from hustle bustle, sirens horns, music chatter, passion form

From New York life, where diverse storm creates lightning rain to drive nourish art’s core.

I rest in what feels like the most quiet of places, amongst a rainbow of inquisitive, warmly lit faces. The New York Public Library Rose Reading Room

I’m lucky to be here, thread set on the loomTogether we read, write, reflect here in solace,

it feels ancient and holy

a gift to pass on as promised.

The library is free and now rare in society

To find common space, and access whether for “them”, you or me

Where no one is “othered” and we are asked to make sure all

are represented and valued with a safe place to call

To further curiosity, feed the soul and mind on any subject you can think of and find.

But the mystifying existence of what makes New York true

is the paradox that stretches and allows for what’s new.

Cuz it is both young and old

And it is both harsh and loving

It breaks open beliefs

Yet respects the becoming

Of community creation

Individual dedication

Neighborhood motivation

Cultural integration

And I, a mere visitor weave more into the city each time I visit

And I’ve been graced with opportunity and welcomed to come sit

With the citizens here at their table and tapestry

and jump right into the conversation

and witness the mastery

Create in real time

The unraveling magic

Walk with others through the ever-changing labyrinth

Exchange ideas

Drop off ego flood with tears

Honor who has been here first

Grieve what’s happened due to thirst

The buzz may lift you

But do your part

allow connection

Grounded heart

Everything exists here

You don’t see it?

Make it clear

Make it happen

the interconnected nature

Of this place we call Manhattan.

We would love to hear about your local community’s creativity, shared spaces, and unique perspectives! Share your thoughts, photos, or student opinions with us. They can be written, spoken or even in the form of an art piece. Thank you for making your local space a special place.
